Lambton Bridge

Project summary

Construction of a 180m-long bridge over the wild river, including two in-river piers. The project involved drilling over 110 linear feet of box piles in the river in approximately 70 feet of water. Once the deep foundations were in place, construction of the foundation units followed, along with the installation of the steel structure and construction of the reinforced concrete deck. Once traffic had been transferred to the new structure, the project included demolition of the old bridge, including demolition of the concrete up to 300mm below the riverbed.

The challenge

The biggest challenge for this project was the placement of the caisson piles in the river from a barge. Coordination and planning of the equipment used and the methods had to be thought through in terms of sediment and drilling mud management, handling and placement of the steel caissons over 90 feet high, handling and placement of the reinforcement columns and concreting of the caissons.
